Front page of Stars and Stripes, 22 May 1945

By PFC. WILLIAMS LAND | STARS AND STRIPES May 22, 1945

Stars and Stripes presents these archive reports as they were written by the reporters in the field. The graphic and politically incorrect language used may be offensive to some readers.

Editor’s Note: A fortnight ago Bill Land, one of our battlefront reporters, learned that he was a father. Back to us by radio came this story of Oki’s orphans. Unable to go home to see his own daughter in Baton Rouge, La., Bill let himself go on Oki’s orphans – being left to die by the Sons of Heaven. But the GIs wouldn’t let the kids die…

OKINAWA – Here’s a story you could call “The Children’s Hour.” Ever since I got that radio about my new baby daughter I’ve had in mind writing a…

Trumbull – Dear Lewis And Clark (2) – Mother’s Day and Grandma’s Birthday – May 12, 1939

Judy Guion's avatar"Greatest Generation" Life Lessons

This is the rest of the letter I posted yesterday from Grandpa to Lad and Dan, both in Venezuela.

The films you sent Ced will use in producing some prints with his Christmas gift.  I will mail magazines occasionally which I hope will reach you without too much delay.  One more thought and then I will get on to the general news.  You speak of the cost of sending airmail letters.  Of course, it is difficult for you to imagine how eagerly we all await your letters, you and Dan, and how empty the week seems when we do not hear from you boys.  I suppose you feel the same way about our letters from home.  However I cannot afford airmail postage as compared with regular rates – – ration of 3 to 25, so while the letters arrived later they arrived just as regularly once a week.  I don’t…

Ye 12th day of May 1939

Dear Lewis and Clark:

Have just finished listening to Charlie McCarthy. he describes two horses he and Skinny Dugan were entering in a race, which reminds me of Dan’s description of some of the burros he has met.  Charlie referred to them as “fugitives from a glue factory”.

You remember, Dan, in one of your recent letters, you mentioned the fact that you had come to the conclusion the opportunities that existed for former generations of young men no longer held much promise in this day and generation.  I go with you on this thought only to a limited extent.  It seems as though just about the same time, the editor of the Post must have been thinking about the same topic, for a few days after receiving your letter I found the editorial…

Minsk In The News

The protests in Minsk have been in the news but who is paying any attention what with the Corona virus, the Democratic convention, Trump’s antics, the heat wave, and other items are grabbing the headlines and dominating the news, in the U.S. at least. But Minsk captures my eye and my thoughts turn to my friend Florence in Dublin whose son married a girl from Minsk. My friend has visited Minsk, met the parents, etc. And I wonder how that young woman in Dublin feels about the news from Minsk. I say young woman – and I think again – she is probably in her 50’s – we are talking about my sons’ generation. And of course Florence must be in my generation – i.e. older.

A couple of years back I posted a link to Tricksy Knitter’s ever-so-helpful chart showing the steps involved in Kitchener Stitch, which I always use to close the toes of my hand knit socks. I find it much easier to follow than a tutorial. Tried to access the chart today,  only to discover a broken link. Disheartened, I hopped over to search the TK site, and was thrilled to find the chart under a new one. And here it is! Hope you find it as useful as I do. Please let me know if you notice another broken link so I can get back on it ASAP.

Speed Wins

I had to go (be taken) downtown today for an EKG prior to my upcoming hand surgery scheduled for Friday August 21st. I was the sole occupant of the Ida Culver van. Social distancing prevents more than one passenger at a time. Due to the reduction in traffic during these Corona Virus times, we arrived at our destination in about 15 minutes flat. By which time I had learned that the driver was renting a house within a stone’s throw of our house in Ballard. Ballard is a Small Community! The driver said to call him when I was finished and he would come back and pick me up. Well, I was finished in about half an hour. If we had had a crystal ball we could have foreseen how efficiently everything was handled and he could have waited nearby rather than driving back to Ida Culver.

Nevertheless we had very interesting conversations en route and now I have arranged for him to transport me again in 2 days time when I have to have yet another Covid-19 test prior to the day surgery the following day.

Fred Couples – Pro Golfer

I see that the golfer Fred Couples is now in his 60’s. He has been playing in the Senior competitions for some 10 years now. My mother carried the on-course score board for him when he played in the PGA Tour Event at Kanapali Maui Hawaii back in the 1980’s. Long before the telecommunications and the technology of the game today. Friends kind of wondered if she was really able for this at her age then but she did it with her usual plucky spirit. She passed in the year 2000 at the age of 88 so she must have been in her late 60’s when she toted that scoreboard for a young Fred Couples.

This is a New Hampshire cat who lived in the barn at my sister Ruth’s farm. My photo inspired me to do a painting. 30 years ago? I’ll try to figure it out. I think it was one of those summers when we visited from Bangladesh. That was in the early 1980’s. 40 years ago.
