Thank You Mrs Corney

Thank you Mrs. Corney. Long ago Mrs Corney gave me a Little Golden book, Prayers for Children. The inscription reads as follows:: “This book belongs to Janet Miller from Mrs. Corney, 1942”. Yes, I remember Mrs. Corney. I thought of her as a golfing friend of my mother.

One time my mother arranged for me to have lunch at Mrs Corney’s home – instead I ran all the way up the hill to my own home. 1942 – Would I have been in 2nd grade age 6 or 7?

I don’t remember Mrs Corney as being a church friend of my mother – but could she have been my Sunday school teacher? And she gave me the Little Golden Book Prayers for Children.

Now my mother must have eventually passed this sweet little book on to my sister Ruth and in turn the book went to Ruth’s daughter Leslie – and the book came to rest in Leslie’s attic. A recent big clean-out by my niece Lesley has resulted in the book being returned to me. Thank you Leslie and Thank you Mrs. Corney

Now in my advanced years I could say a prayer for these departed souls who’ were part of my younger life – my mother, Mrs Corney, and my sister Ruth

My Ancestors and the War of the Roses

After reading several of the Philippa Gregory novels about the English Civil War, the War of the Roses, set in England 1450-1480, Red vs White, House of Lancaster vs House of York, I decided to check my family tree and see whether I had any ancestors who might have been involved. I didn’t have to look long. A royal ancestor promptly surfaced – the 2nd Duke of York, the 3rd Duke of. Norfolk was my 15th Great Grandfather. The ancestry tree gets rather sketchy going that far back but it’s fun to pretend it might be true.

5th Air Force strafing Clark Air Field, 1945

Ringing in the new year 1945 with fireworks had a far different meaning in the Pacific and CBI Theaters than we’re used to. It began with ______

In the Philippines – bombings of Clark Field on Luzon and Sasa on the island of Mindanao. Wasile Bay enemy bivouac areas felt the bombardments from overhead B-24’s and B-25’s. Manila saw the fighter-bombers as shipyards and other airfields and ammunition dumps were blown. US Air Force planes sank the Japanese ship No. 7,Taiko Maruand No. 3,Taiwan Maru, off Masinloc, P.I.

ARSENIC AND OLD PEOPLE

I laughed and laughed reading this.

Don Ostertag's avatarDon Ostertag: Off Stage

A Reblog

I saw on FB that today is a very big birthday of Peter Michael Goetz, one of the shining actors in the Golden Years of the Guthrie Theater. Although Peter has acted on TV and movies, I think of him as a stage actor. From an acting intern at the Guthrie to Broadway, from small parts to playing leads, from comedy to intense drama. A wide range of roles and captivating in each of them.

This is one of my favorite memories of Peter on the Guthrie stage where he not only played the male lead, he also almost acted as the head usher…albeit it doesn’t portray his acting skills as much as it is an example of why working with him was always fun.

It was a Wednesday matinee of Arsenic and Old Lace, at the Guthrie. There was a large contingent of senior citizens.

Unheard From

We were neglectful this year and did not send Christmas cards. We also received very few. Each day,, as the days pass, I think oh I must send out a few notes. My resolutions are firm, my actions are nil. Now if only my Christmas card list reflected my list of readers of my blog, all would be solved by a HOLIDAY MESSAGE HERE. But alas the 2 lists are quite separate.

For readers of my blog I have gone my photos and found a few in the red and green colors of the season and set them out below, so.

SEASONS GREETINGS

Tremont Street from Boylston Street, Boston Mass. Christmas shopping in my youth.

Colorful Greetings

Year’s End

Bald Head Cliff, Ogunquit Maine

There is something symbolic about coming to the end of a calendar year and “stepping”into the New Year.. In this case, transitioning from 2021 to 2022. Is this cliff symbolic of our transition? Or should I find a picture of a mountain we have to climb? Reading the newspaper, 2021 is described as a difficult year. Is 2022 going to be even more difficult? This is in fact a very personal question.

What lies in the future? – for you? for me?

Whatever lies ahead let us embrace the days with gratitude and positivity. In the words of the song – always look on the bright side of life!!
