A day spent at the beach, swimming and diving and getting a float and paddling. They met 2 boys from the South End of London. A break for lunch then back to the beach where they stayed until 6. After dinner they met the boys on the pier. Went to the Pavilion and saw White Horse Inn – a pretty and colorful musical show. Smoked inside. Both of them got badly sunburned.
They had bicycles delivered to them at their hotel and then rode to West Bournemouth. After lunch at their hotel they bicycled to Sandbanks Tea at the hotel and then to the beach for a good swim and a walk. In the evening they sat on the pier for a while and walked around the town. Sounds festive – music, people going to the movies, games of shuffleboard, a band concert, a Pavilion orchestra.

When I read a great novel or a series of novels, sometimes I wish I could step into the book and join the world experienced by the characters. I just know that if I were there, I’d feel at home and contribute positively to the plot. I think it is those characters that keep me returning to works by the same author and even read those same novels over and over again. For this year’s challenge, I plan to visit those characters we all know and love. Those characters that we want to step off the page because we know that if they did, we’d be best friends forever. …

A man from American Express came for them and took them to Waterloo Station. They were seated in the dining car for the ride to Bournemouth where they took a taxi to their hotel. They went swimming right away and stayed on the crowded beach from four to six. They went down in the lift from which one has a very scary view. The beach is quite long and the cliffs are quite high, steep, and white.
For dinner they had pigeon for meat.
It being Sunday they slept late and after breakfast they walked to Westminster and caught the music and the recessional at the end of the service. They walked around for a while. She keeps mentioning seeing “funny” or “queer” people. ( I interpret this to mean just different or unusual from people watching in Boston or New York)
They had lunch in Scott’s – {a famous restaurant on Coventry Street in the West End.) My mother had a sherry. lobster salad, and strawberries

After lunch They went to the British Museum and then via what seemed a long and complicated route to Hampton Court. Returned the same way and finally took a bus to the foot of Haymarket where they met the Lewises and the DeLongs. They all walked back to Westminster. Walked through Trafalgar to Lyons Corner House. Along the way she had a serious talk with Mr. Lewis about religion, Met Mr. Thomas. They all had something to eat and then waked up to the Belgravia. It seemed sad to say goodby to them again.
At the start of the day they were eager to see if their trick Mr. Thomas had worked. It made for much laughter at breakfast.
They were impressed by Peterborough Cathedral. The architecture is graceful though it doesn’t soar as muck as Gothic. Passed through Huntingdon and saw the birthplace of Oliver Cromwell. In Cambridge they visited King’s Cpllege Chapel. They visited Clare College and Keyes College nd Trinity College. Lunch at the Bull Hoyel. After lunch Mr. Thomas took her and Lib to Corpus Christie College.
They reached London late in the afternoon. Went to their hotel and later walked down to Lyons. Waited a long time for Lois and Mr. Thomas. Had a wonderful steak and a chocolate sundae. Went to the Regent Palace and met Dr. VanderByl and the Lewises. They all walked down to Charing Cross. After Lois sent a cablegram they walked back to the Regent Palace Hotel and had drinks in the lounge. Mr. Thomas put her and Lib on the bus and then took Lois home.

The usual routine except there seems to be an added item – singing patriotic songs and Mr. Lewis played his flute. Saw castles, gardens. Fine trees in Sherwood Forest. Saracen Head. Newark, George Hotel in Grantham. Stamford a fascinating place with old houses, churches,and streets. Monster garden at George Hotel..
She got the farewell party started after much effort. Played Egg in the bottle, the lighthouse keeper’s daughter, I have an idea, Statues, and Murder. A few of them tried to stay up late but the porter sent them to bed. He had to lock the door. Tied Mr. Thomas’ door.- playing a trick.

Most of the day was spent in York at the Minster and walking around the town.
After leaving Edinburgh their first stop was Abbotsford – Scott’s home.
On to Melrose Abbey for lunch and then pn to Dryburgh Abbey. More history and gardens The most beautiful view in Scotland – horseshoe bend of the Tweed. Traveled through more level country to reach Penrith at 6 o’clock.
In the evening Mr. Thomas took them on a tour of the garden.
My dog and cat photos – these postcards weren’t exactly lost but I’m certainly glad I stumbled upon their hiding place – hiding in plain sight, as is often the case.
