Day 39 – Paris – Morning, Afternoon, and Evening Tours

Mr. Jansen was their guide for both the morning and afternoon tours today.  In the morning they saw  the Louvre, the Church of Saint Germain, Palais de Justice.  They went into the Pantheon and Notre Dame.

(Since Notre Dame was in the news recently, I’ll go into more detail about what my mother had to write about that Cathedral.).  She wrote that the Notre Dame had marvelous stone carvings and statues – gargoyles and saints.  Gorgeous deeply colored rose windows at the back and at either end of the transept.  The columns are fancy, but the roof quite simple.  The far end of the Cathedral is beautifully shaped.

The tour continued.  They saw the copy of Trojan’s Column depicting Napoleon’s battles – made of cannons picked up at Austerlitz.  The Bastille, the Tuileries, Arc de Carrousel.

Had  a good lunch at Webers.  Strong red French wine.

The afternoon tour –  the Church of the Madeleine- impressive but she didn’t like it very much.  Place de la Concorde, Napoleon’s Tomb.  Passed the Eiffel Tower and the schools of the Sorbonne.  Stopped at the Trocadero.   Walked back to their hotel via some markets.

Had a good dinner at the Medova Tea Room.

The night tour – drinking champagne, Les Oubliettes, La Boule Noie, Le Moulin Rouge, Bal Tabarin, more champagne, dancers in costumes and less.

The Case of the Gilded Fly (1944) by Edmund Crispin

I’m reading this book now.

armchairreviewer's avatarcrossexaminingcrime

This is the first book of my re-read project and it was also Crispin’s first mystery novel. Six years has enabled me to forget pretty much everything about this plot, so I was by and large coming to this book with a clean slate. Though having said that I think there were a number of things that I noticed with this book that I didn’t really pick up on with my first reading. One of these things is how Crispin’s novels do not necessarily have the same light hearted breeziness of earlier 1930s comic crime novels. Written in 1944, with the plot set in 1940, there is a decidedly darker hue to this book, which I hadn’t fully appreciated on my first read. However I am getting ahead of myself…

Over the course of a trying railway trip we are introduced to 11 passengers heading into Oxford. One of course…

Day 37 – Paris – Versailles

After breakfast they went to American Express and joined the tour bus (full) to Versailles.  Visited  Malmaison, the Palace, Petit Trianon, Temple D’Amour.. Returned to Paris through St Cloud.  Detailed listing of the things they saw.  Napoleon and Marie Antoinette = many portraits and statues.   (It sounds as if they really enjoyed it all.)

Day 36 – Arrival in France July 14, 1934 – Bastille Day

They had a cabin for the overnight crossing to Le Havre.  They were met by a man from American Express who guided them smoothly through customs and onto the train to Paris.  She writes that her initial impression was that the countryside looked more like home.  They were met at the station in Paris (presumably he took them to their hotel).  They were staying at the Regina on the Rue de Rivoli.

They watched the parade of the Garde Republican, Infantry and Cavalry.

A Very Happy Easter

Elizabeth Lovick's avatarNorthern Lace

This year I decided to follow the German-speaking tradition and have an Easter tree.  I have been in Switzerland around Easter several times, and love the little scenes they set up in shop windows, cable car stations and everywhere else.

The decorations for my tree, the wreath and lights have come from many countries, from Latvia to China and back to the UK!  So enjoy some photos of them on this happy day.

Day 35 – Final Day in Bournemouth Friday July 13th 1934

They went for a long bicycle ride in the morning.  They rode along the East Cliff – about the same as the West.  They went through towns and rode for miles through woods filled with rhododendron.  They went through Christchurch and then to Ringwood – no trees just moors.  Heather everywhere.  Lunch in Ringwood.  When they got back they went down to the beach where she “made an easy pick-up” – Stewart Plantagenet Bishop, a commercial traveler.  He and his pal were fast workers.  They had a silly time fooling around.  My mother writes that it was very good that they were going to France that evening for the boys/men were too fast for Lib and herself.

After dinner they took the train to Southampton and left on the boat to France at 11;15 p.m.

Day 34 – Excursion from Bournemouth to Winchester

They were a party of seven –  three English, two American, two Indian  The country looked quite different – beautiful parts of Bournemouth with many trees and much shrubbery, farther out sandy moors with great treeless spaces then thick inviting woods, New Forest.  Stopped at Minstead.

Day 33 – Bournemouth

B Beach    A day spent at the beach, swimming and diving and getting a float and paddling.  They met 2 boys from the South End of London.  A break for lunch then back to the beach where they stayed until 6.  After dinner they met the boys on the pier.  Went to the Pavilion and saw White Horse Inn – a pretty and colorful musical show.  Smoked inside.  Both of them got badly sunburned.

Day 32 – Bournemouth

They had bicycles delivered to them at their hotel and then rode to West Bournemouth.  After lunch at their hotel they bicycled to Sandbanks  Tea at the hotel and then to the beach for a good swim and a walk.  In the evening they sat on the pier for a while  and walked around the town.  Sounds festive – music, people going to the movies, games of shuffleboard, a band concert, a Pavilion orchestra.
