For those who aren’t familiar with the Lincoln Assassination and its various players, Dr. Samuel Mudd was the physician who treated John Wilkes Booth, Lincoln’s assassin. Booth broke his leg jumping from Lincoln’s presidential box at Ford’s Theater. It was never clear whether Mudd knew of Wilkes’ plans in advance, whether he was a part of a conspiracy to assassinate Lincoln or whether he even knew of Wilkes’ involvement when he splinted Wilkes’ broken leg. Regardless, he was found guilty of treasonous conspiracy by a military tribunal appointed by President Andrew Johnson.

Booth escaped hanging by a single vote of the military commission members and was instead sentenced to life imprisonment. He was shipped to Fort Jefferson, a Civil War military base on Dry Tortugas, the westernmost Florida Key, which was being used as a…

Nantucket Island Massachusetts

Reverse side – Nantucket Island
Note the postmark – 1933
The message is interesting – “Tuesday. Left Newport (Rhode Island I assume) yesterday morning in lifting fog. Fog fell again when half-way east. Dodged steamer exactly like one week ago until we hit the lightship and then swung off to the eastward. Reached here last night about 11 in clear weather.” Signed Ed

My sister Nan first discovered the charm of Nantucket in the summer of 1947. My sister Ruth and my mother and I joined her in subsequent years. We all had special memories of swimming and sunbathing at the Jetties. And my sisters met their future husbands at the Jetties. Looking down the years you might say I have 4 plus 8 nieces and nephews thanks to the charm of the Jetties.

I doubt that it was our first disagreement but this postcard reminds me of one disagreement early on.

Mt Kenya Safari Club
Presumably these birds are to be seen at the Mt. Kenya Safari Club. They are very handsome and colorful I must say. BUT when Ian, my fiancé told me he had booked the world famous Mt Kenya Safari Club for our honeymoon, I was somewhat dismayed, surprised, and annoyed. First of all I assumed that we were jointly planning our honeymoon destination. What possessed him to take this decision on his own? And furthermore I had no wish to stay at the Mt. Kenya Safari Club. Glitzy, Hollywood star studded, etc. Well we didn’t fall out completely over this disagreement – thankfully …….but.

Combined Harvester, Oregon
It must have been difficult to assemble all these horses.
And I wonder when this image would have been made – late 1800’s??

Laitieres Flamandes – Flemish Milkmaids
I especially like the dogs who pull the milk carts.

A good example of TAANSTAFL.

WC is a member of the Board of Directors of Idaho Conservation League, which has strongly held, public views on this issue. In fact, WC will quote ICL’s position later. WC wants to be very clear that the views expressed in this blog post are WC’s, not ICL’s, and that ICL bears no responsibility for the options expressed here.
WC has argued earlier that when it comes to green energy, There Ain’t No Such Thing As a Free Lunch, TANSTAAFL. There is always a price. In an earlier post, WC mentioned the controversy around that proposed Lava Ridge Wind Farm as an example. In this post, WC looks more closely at that proposed large scale green energy project and how TANSTAAFL applies to it.
The proposed Lava Ridge Wind Farm would be located in south-central Idaho, south and a little west of…
