Five Views of a Yellow-rumped Warbler

Nature is wonderful.

Wickersham's Conscience's avatarWickersham's Conscience

WC was lucky enough to find a pair of Yellow-rumped Warblers hawking a hatch of insects at the ponds in Kathryn Albertson Park last week. It was cold, breezy and overcast, with mostly gloomy light, but that wasn’t stopping the Yellow-rumpeds from chasing their meal. Here are five images intended to cheer up WC’s readers who are tired of cold, gloom, rain and snow.

Well, it cheered WC up a little, anyway. Hope it does the same for you.

Return of Bird of the Week: Thick-billed Murre

Wickersham's Conscience's avatarWickersham's Conscience

Thick-billed Murre pair, St. Paul Island, Pribilof Islands, Alaska

There are more auklet species; WC just doesn’t have photos of them, so they won’t appear in RoBotW. Instead, we’ll move on to another genus of Alcids, the Murres.

The largest Alcid that has survived contact with humanity is this week’s Bird of the Week, the Thick-billed Murre.1

Common Murre in front; Thick-billed Murre behind. Note the differently shaped bills, slightly stockier Thick-billed and the white line on the upper mandible in the Thick-billed

The Thick-billed Murre is about 17 inches (43 cm) tall, and weighs just over 2.2 pounds (1.1 kg). That makes them slightly larger than their cogener, the Common Murre. The Atlantic population tends to be slightly smaller than the Pacific population.

In summer, this species is found in continental shelf waters of the Arctic Ocean and adjacent seas, shifting southward in winter. It nests on precipitous…

A Postcard from Colorado

Boulder Colorado

Message side

This card is from my college friend and roommate Rachel. I knew she lived in Boulder Colorado, but the card is postmarked Louisville Colorado. Searching Wikipedia, I find Louisville is in the Southeastern corner of Boulder County.

The card was written in June 1991 and addressed to me in Nairobi Kenya – 30+ years ago.

Time passes – Rachel is no longer with us -sadly she passed away a year ago after a long illness. And because of COVID restrictions her family was not able to be with her for her final days.

I remember her especially in these days leading to our Middlebury Reunion, Class of 1958, gathering in June 2023.

BOOK REVIEW: THE DRESSMAKERS OF AUSCHWITZ

Anne's avatarSomething Over Tea

One of the most remarkable books I have read recently is Lucy Adlington’s The Dressmakers of Auschwitz: the true story of the women who sewed to survive. It covers a relatively unknown aspect of the Second World War that needs to be told.

For most informed people, the name Auschwitz is synonymous with the horrors of what we have learned about the Holocaust and, over time, we have become familiar with the narration of the mass deportation of Jews to camps, such as Auschwitz, where they were exterminated in their tens of thousands – largely through the use of gas chambers, although many were shot or literally worked to death – barely living anyway on the inadequate food they were provided with.

Some of you may recall watching the film Schindler’s List, which portrayed so well the prevailing callous attitude of camp guards who quickly learned to regard the…
