FOCUS ON IMPALA

Thank you for this very informative post about this beautiful wild animal.

As beautiful as they are, impala (Aepyceros melampus),  tend to be overlooked by tourists to large game parks, such as the Kruger National Park and others – mainly because they are on the constant lookout for ‘more exciting animals’. This is likely so because impala are the most common antelope of the bushveld regions of South Africa. One sees them everywhere and so it came as no surprise when our guide on a night drive through a section of the Kruger National Park declined to stop after we’d spotted a herd or two, laughingly dismissing them as ‘the MacDonalds of the bush’ because they are preyed upon by most predators. Here is a herd of impala ewes lying in the dry winter grass with a few waterbuck doing the same in the background.

I think they are rather elegant animals which deserve a closer look. You will notice…

Tunnels in Boston

East Boston Tunnel Entrance, Near Atlantic Avenue Station

Note the postmark 1908

This tunnel predates the Sumner Tunnel and was for “trolly cars” only.

I never realized this. For me I just remember the Sumner Tunnel in the 1940’s. And that memory I associate with my father. Little did I realize how new the Sumner Tunnel was at that time. It was built in 1947.

Sam Mudd Slept Here

Casement believed to have served as Dr. Samuel Mudd’s cell, Fort Jefferson, Dry Tortugas, Florida

For those who aren’t familiar with the Lincoln Assassination and its various players, Dr. Samuel Mudd was the physician who treated John Wilkes Booth, Lincoln’s assassin. Booth broke his leg jumping from Lincoln’s presidential box at Ford’s Theater. It was never clear whether Mudd knew of Wilkes’ plans in advance, whether he was a part of a conspiracy to assassinate Lincoln or whether he even knew of Wilkes’ involvement when he splinted Wilkes’ broken leg. Regardless, he was found guilty of treasonous conspiracy by a military tribunal appointed by President Andrew Johnson.

Booth escaped hanging by a single vote of the military commission members and was instead sentenced to life imprisonment. He was shipped to Fort Jefferson, a Civil War military base on Dry Tortugas, the westernmost Florida Key, which was being used as a…

Note the postmark – 1933

The message is interesting – “Tuesday. Left Newport (Rhode Island I assume) yesterday morning in lifting fog. Fog fell again when half-way east. Dodged steamer exactly like one week ago until we hit the lightship and then swung off to the eastward. Reached here last night about 11 in clear weather.” Signed Ed

Note the 1930 postmark

My sister Nan first discovered the charm of Nantucket in the summer of 1947. My sister Ruth and my mother and I joined her in subsequent years. We all had special memories of swimming and sunbathing at the Jetties. And my sisters met their future husbands at the Jetties. Looking down the years you might say I have 4 plus 8 nieces and nephews thanks to the charm of the Jetties.
